How can I keep my pet hydrated?

While pets get some of their hydration from their food, they still need plenty of water to maintain a healthy body especially as days get warmer. This is especially true if your dog or cat eats dried food.

Here are our top tips for keeping your pet well-hydrated this summer. We will talk about dogs, cats and ferrets.

Hydration drinks aren’t only for sports people

Hydration drinks are designed to make water more appealing to your pet. We love Furr Boost’s range of hydration drinks suitable for dogs over eight weeks old.

Enriched with vitamins and minerals, these handy drink cartons can be used in lots of different ways – as a food topper, frozen into a pupsicle (great for hot days!) or on their own.

These drinks are available in chicken, pork, beef, venison and vegan flavours to make them more appetising for your dog, encouraging them to drink.

Canagan for Cats soups are palatable for cats and ferrets and should be used over a food to increase the moisture content.

Provide a reliable water source in the home

It’s important your pets have multiple water sources to go to in your home, even more so if you have a multi-pet or busy household. Inadequate water supply may create stress and competition in pets who are sharing a home as well as potential health issues.

Cats in particular are known to be attracted to running water. Ancestrally, this is how they decide if water is safe to drink. Ceramic or stainless steel water fountains offer cats a hygienic water source.

The material may also help keep water cooler for longer. Contrary to many sources of advice, ferrets should not have to drink from water bottles attached to cages where they risk breaking their canine teeth. Ferrets should have the same clean water source as cats.

Staying hydrated on the go

Warm, sunny days mean there are more opportunities to embrace the best form of enrichment there is – the great outdoors. Access to water sources such as ponds and rivers provide a natural water source. Healthy, robust dogs should be allowed to hydrate from rivers, ponds and troughs if available.

For fresh water on the go, we recommend the K9 H2O Aluminium pet water bottles which come with a handy twist top lid that acts as a drinking bowl.
