Did you know that unacceptable levels of pesticides from flea treatments, such as spot-on products and flea collars have been found in UK waterways?

Recent reports from the New Forest National Park Authority revealed that ponds and rivers tested had higher-than-expected levels of two common flea pesticides—imidacloprid and fipronil. These chemicals, both highly toxic and banned for outdoor agriculture in the UK, are often used to keep pets free from fleas and ticks. The alarming findings were even highlighted by the British Dragonfly Society.

Further studies have also found that certain ponds, like those on Hampstead Heath, had concentrations of imidacloprid and fipronil 20 times higher than what’s considered safe for invertebrate wildlife. This poses a serious threat to pond life, such as dragonflies, and impacts food resources for birds. (Source).
